Im decorating my house for Christmas and own a bunch of spruce branches to make a headdress on top of a mantle. The single thing is Im worried that it will dry out, so Im wondering what I can do to engineer it last? That, and how long do they usually ultimate for?
Answers: Fresh cut branches will last the longest, and keeping them cool and moist will aid. A humidifier in the room keep the tree more moist -- as well as reducing static, abiding heat bills and keeping your skin soft, too.
Ways to preserve the branches moist...
- Florist tubes -- the little green plastic and rubber tubes that the florist puts individual roses or corsages into. These could be tricky to hide.
- Turn past its sell-by date any mini-lights when the room is not active. The steam from them will dry the branches faster.
- Unless the branches are VERY fresh, don't light candles surrounded by the arrangement. Pine goes 'WOOF' and burns speedily! Even with fresh branches, candles should not be disappeared unattended for a second. Put them in cup jars or containers to hold on to the flame or dripping wax from contacting the needles and branches.
