Okay I'll be moving into my grandmothers old house soon. I need some assist. Me and a couple of friends will have to do a lot of cleaning up to do on this house. This is my first time doing ANY work close to this. I am completely lost. All I know is that I need to paint the house, rip the carpets up, score the linoleum off the living room floor...the old renters painted the dining room floor (that use to be wood) the ugliest red color and didnt even paint it right. I own a wall the looks like it just requirements to be drywalled again. I've never painted so I dont know how much one gallon is going to cover. Its an old house, and its fine if it doesnt look fancy, but I am on a VERY VERY strict budget. Im mad I even enjoy to spend my own money because my grandmother isnt a good leaser. Help of where to start and some tips?
Answers:    You enjoy a big job ahead of you :(
On the paint, one gallon of paint will cover about 400 sq.ft. If you do two coats of paint, later one gallon will do 200 sq. ft.
To figure out the amount of paint you need, you will have need of to measure the walls. Say if one wall is 12 ft X 8 ft high (12x8=120) so the wall will help yourself to 120 sq. ft of paint.
If you go with one color you will probably find that it would be smaller quantity expensive to buy a 5 gallon bucket of paint. Just note that the less expensive paint is harder to apply and may require more later one coat.

For the carpet, about the just way is just to rip it out. Try to disappear the wood tacks in one piece so that you can use them when replacing the hearth rug. If your not putting new carpet contained by, then take the wood tack out. (The wood tacks look like a courtyard stick with short tacks or nail sticking out to hold the carpet).
One the wood floor that was painted, it depends on what your intentions are. If your going to repaint it, sand down the red paint. Remove as much as you can. I would recommend purchasing a unexpensive palm sander. Start with 60 grit sand thesis, then 80 grit sand paper. Then sweep the floor. Then beside a damp (not dripping wet) mop, mop the floor to remove any loose dust.
If you want to refinish the wood floor back to wood looking, you will enjoy to remove all of the old paint. Get the entire floor so it looks resembling bare wood. Then use a fine sand paper close to 120 grit and finish sand the floor. Then you will need to stain it, then finish it beside coats of wood floor sealer. (it will be more expessive to refinish it as a wood floor rather then repainting it)
If you hold a Home Depot or Lowes near you I would highly recoomend them for your supplies. Not singular are the the most reasonable in prices but also set aside great help and support.

Good Luck!
Some cities have places where on earth you can buy remodeling items for a very low cost, and may have paint in that. Also, most stores that mix paints have an area where on earth they put "mistakes" for sale at a low price. You would need to capture several of these and mix them all together before you started sculpture and you wouldn't really know what color you'd end up with. You could repaint the dining room floor a different color. Learn this rule.everything will lug three times longer than you expect.

Just take it one room at a time and be patient. When you enjoy finished a room you will be so proud of yourself.

The first poster gave you some very moral advice.
