I know that pine is a softer wood so would it be better to hire someone or could a do-it-yourselfer tackle it?
Answers: You can refinish your pine floors yourself, it takes some work, but if you are scant, you can have a nice looking floor that you can be proud of.
Start by renting a floor sander, and use a medium grit sand tabloid, as pine is a soft wood. The floor sander can be very aggressive. You can easily walk deeper then you want or need to.
Get an orbital sander to do the edges and corners. It is a foot held device so you need to get on your hand and knees to do this step.
Then use a fine grade sand paper to smooth the surface and prepare it for finishing beside a good quality polyurethane or varnish.
Good luck

The house I grew up in have wide plank pine floors, and I know my mom refinished one the rooms herself (a smallish bedroom). I know she said it was not at adjectives pleasant! When larger areas of the house had to be refinished, we hired a company to do it. It may turn out to look fairly similar, but I presume it's better to hire a company, especially if you're doing a large area or the adjectives house, just because it is a really difficult, labor intense job to do by yourself. Unless you enjoy a team of big guys who are willing to do the work for you or you love home reorganization projects.
