Answers: electric fireplaces are cleaner and for the most part safer than any fuel burning type. The "flames and logs" look pretty much equal. I just purchased an electric fireplace complete next to a mahogany mantel. Its gorgeous!! and if you really just want the effect in need all the hassle of installing gas lines and enlisting the services of plumbers and heat technicians, electric is a simpler choice.
Maybe not so much better but I've heard of instances where on earth on some models the pilot lights had gone out and nearby was a gas slick in the house so the electric ones might be safer
