International Fire Code: Need Help Understanding Exits? I have a business something like 1200 Sq ft, with 2 exits....
I have a business something like 1200 Sq ft, with 2 exits. I'm building a room just about 7 feet x 14 foot where an Exit door is. This will cloak the exit door in the room but it will still be accessible. Currently, the exit door sits contained by the back room which is in the order of 17x17, so Im basicly building a smaller room inside a larger one by putting up two walls.
Id like a pocket door primary to this new room, but I've read : "Side-hinged exit doors must be used to connect rooms to exit routes". Does this be determined just the actual exit door, or the door ascendant to the room its in?
I've read: "An exit access must be at least possible 28 inches wide at adjectives points. ". Does this mean the door, or the route to the door? There will be a massage bed surrounded by front of the exit door, but you can easily hike around it, and it will not block the exit door. Does this mean the door have to be 28 inches wide, or the route around the massage table to seize to the door?
Im so confused.
Answers: If you look at the intent of the IFC, you'll understand that in that should be no impediment if and when you have to hand down the building in armour of fire or other emergency. Since some people may hysterics in this situation, at hand should be a clear path to the exit door. That is why a pocket door should not be used, because within a state of panic, inhabitants may fumble when trying to open the door.
I suggest that you discuss with your local building public servant, or with the fire department. Take along a sketch drawn to enormity. They'll make sure you are compliant beside the codes, and also advise you what permit will be required.
