I am wondering how much it would cost to have an interior designer come to my house and impart me a consultation. You know, tell what peices of furniture to buy, where on earth to place objects, how do decorate my walls, things of that make-up. Is it worth it? Has anybody ever had this done?
Answers: Interior designers set their own prices, and alter greatly in their skill and expertise.
Some will vend their services for a fee, others work on a cost-plus argument. Some just hung up their shingle, and others hold been doing it for eons...
You can interview a designer similar to any other professional, and they should not charge you for this - they are interviewing for the "job." Just because someone call themself a designer doesn't mean they will listen to your thinking or have great accepted wisdom of their own, so you will want to find the right fit.
Many furniture stores have complimentary staff designers who will assist you, but they probably wouldn't come to your house - you'd probably own to draw your own floorplan. But they will still give you counsel on paint treatments and floor coverings, etc.
Then there's folks like "Decorating Den" who singular work in people's homes. That, I believe, is a franchise.
Also, be aware that "Decorator" and "Designer" are recurrently used interchangeably, but the Decorator may be self-proclaimed while the Designer is more likely to own formal training.
Good luck & enjoy the process. Don't furnish up complete control to anyone. And don't call the Designer 2 weeks after the livelihood is over to ask him/her what to do because you ran out of that special toilet article that matches the bathroom exactly...
