the tile board is on the inside of the lip of the tub. You should hold asked at the building supply store. There is wall board adhesive (different than skeletal set). I have see others use thinset, but they were not tile layer and it was basically " a job" they did. If it is for yourself, I tend to want to use stuff that is gonna final longer than 2 months before in that may be problems.
It also depends on what thickness of tiles you get - wall type or floor type

Leave a little space for grouting or use a sealant. Water will spill over the tub during use or from condensation. You call for a barrier to hold it from getting under the tile.

When we redo my bathroom, we used mastic instead of mortar then grouted everything. After that, we applied a scraggy line of silicone (barely visible) on the grout touching the tub's frontage and sealed the other grout seam with a cheap sea sealant.

The extra time is worth it. Now regardless of what gets spilled, broken, or doesn`t matter what, cleanup is easy and nil can stain the grout. (think hair dye)

Good luck.
Answers:    For the sponsor board leave a 1/4" crack at the tub to deal next to any deflection issues you might have contained by the floor.

Use a thin-set mortar to set the tile--if it is ceramic (Ardex make a great thin-set). If you are installing natural stone, especially marble, look for a untaught stone epoxy that won't transmit its color thru the tile.

At the tile joint at the tub resign from the same outlet you are using for the tile pattern. Then instead of using grout, use a color matched grout caulking. Ask your local hardware guy or tile supplier for this product. This will hold on to the grout from cracking between the dissimilar materials of the tub and tile.

Good luck,
