I would like to preserve it simple, and the style I have contained by our home is kind of a shabby sheek look... Or rustic look... Any planning on wall decor for the stairs?

Abstract limp like: wreath, wreath-like construct (just patterned something or another)
choose either complementary or contrasting colors, depending on your partiality
No family pictures - that's grandma stuff
do you own a tapestry / wall hanging you could put up

I suggest getting three or four small prints with matching theme or by matching artist and place them at even intervals up the stairway.
