I have 1 rectangular shape plate/tray 6"wide x18" long, which I want to hang lengthwise... I also have 1 sizeable squarish 16"x16" plate & 1 oval shaped 18"x14" plate.
I wanted to hang these adjectives on my apartment kitchen walls, but here are the problems I'm running into: the long rectangular tray is too long for the single-plate 1-piece holders - and it absolutely needs to be hung up & down (it's going on a come to a point wall). The other 2 larger pieces are too large for the expandable (spring-type) plate holders & none of the 3-pieces have any holes to attach a hanger to surrounded by the back anyway.. does anyone know of any INDIVIDUAL plate holders that would work for such large plates/platters?
The spring type of holder comes within several different sizes. ask at you hardware store. They usually come in sizes 3.5 'to 5.0', all the opening up to 14' to20'. If you can't hang them that way you might ask your local picture framer, they usually enjoy lots of ideas how to hang things. Unfortunately near really isn't anything out there for your large plates. We own an 15 x 15 round and have had to resort to expanding on what is out in that to hang it. Previously we had plant hooks holding it but I didn't resembling the look. My husband took the largest plate hanger available and expanded it with some tweaking so we could hang it but we looked long and intricate. Usually plates of this size are on plate holders on a table or buffet but even those holders for larger sizes are hard to get. They are usually sold beside the plates if they are available. I think there is a huge bazaar out there for these types of displays. You are going to have to be creative minus compromising your pieces safety.
I also collect ceramics and have moderately a few "artsy" platters that are displayed through out my home.
As mentioned, normally these are sold with a solid wooden stand ~ these can usually be purchased from a local art gallery.
Unless the ceramics enjoy built in hangers (and some do) it's best not to suspend them on a wall. Those springy hook things can damage plates & ceramics over time and should never be used for anything valuable.
If you are fervent on hanging these up, think going on for buying a platter or plate rail. These are narrow shelves that attach to a wall and are designed for holding plates. Plate rail can be found in home decorating stores.
Answers: Here's what I would do: buy the plate holders so you enjoy the springs and claws to use. Remove these parts and attach to a larger "base" that you make from a wire coat hanger. You'll call for heavy wire cutters and 2 pliers to craft the bends but with a little moderation you'll end up with a substantial enough plate holder.
