If your are trying to make the room look lighter and bigger use lighter colors and if you are trying to bring in the room look more cosy then choose heat colors.
I personally love the camel colors in different shades going away the ceiling white and baseboards white. Then that gives you a independent background.
Stay near plain colored furniture. Add pretty colorful throws and pillows to add some color. Candles surrounded by some wooden or rot iron holders always look pretty. Big bowls whether clay or wood are nice too and can set off an nouns. Lamps if any leave a nonpartisan shade on them. Big wooden mirror on the wall makes the room look bigger and give it depth. Pretty plants real or copied silk are nice too. A pretty Vase filled beside fake grasses or rocks. A rub can put in color to the floor and texture. I have a rattan one that I just love. Use your dining room chairs beside the arm for extra seating. Put a pretty covering over it or on the form. Put a throw across the arm to add texture and color. Neutral color curtains within a pretty texture.
Bathrooms- Pretty bins to add things approaching soaps, washclothes, etc. Candle in pretty holder for put a bet on of toilet, pretty trashcan. matching acessories. Colored rug for the floor. Pretty pictures for the wall.
