WE ARE SLOWLY RENOVATING OUR HOUSE ONE ROOM AT A TIME. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING OUR BEDROOM. WE BOUGHT THIS HOUSE A FEW YEARS AGO AND IT IS AN OLDER HOUSE. OUR BED ROOM HAS PANELING IN IT. IT IS LIGHT COLOR AND PRETTY BUT I HATE IT. WE DONT WANT TO TEAR IT DOWN AND REDO IT. WE HAVE A BUDGET. SO WE DECIDED TO PAINT OVER IT. WE HAVE NEVER DONE THAT. HOW DO YOU SUGGEST PAINTING OVER PANELING. I KNOW IT CAN BE DONE BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN THE RESULTS. BUT I DONT KNOW HOW TO DO IT. ONE WAY WE HAVE THOUGHT OF IS FILLING IN THE LITTLE SPACES ON PANELING WITH DRYWALL, PRIMER, THEN PAINT. THEN ANOTHER WAY WOULD BE TO PUT PAINTABLE WALLPAPER, I HAVE SEEN. I DONT KNOW WHICH WOULD BE BETTER. PLEASE IF YOU HAVE DONE THIS PLEASE GIVE US SUGGESTIONS!
Answers:    I've done this on numerous projects and can walk you through the steps that'll bring the panneled walls to look like strange solid plaster or drywall. This depends on the thickness of the paneling that's now surrounded by place. . . if it's 1/4" thick you can do it, if it's 1/8"-3/16" I strongly recomend you chose the other option, which is to relaminate your walls beside 1/4" drywall.

I've seen another alternative that was cheap and looked great. The human being didn't fill in the cracks, but painted adjectives the paneling one color in flat paint (whatever color you choose) and then go back over every other section and painted it beside the same color but with a make notes on finish. So the right side of the groove was flat and the left side be glossy.

I've wallpapered over paneling and if you get the right cut-out or design, you can barely see the grooves in the paneling, if at adjectives.

They make a specific filler just for paneling grooves if you want to steep it in and paint.
