Flylady.net have it all mapped out, and you can achieve daily reminders, and it's listed already, how to orchestrate and deep clean. Sit down and map out in recent times what you want , how you want it , and what colors you are going to use. Then do one room at a time.
Everybody probably does this differently. However, I recommend:
1. Think about every room surrounded by your house. What do you really want to store in that room? Are your dressers and closets sufficient for the bedrooms? Do you have the right cabinet and drawers and pullouts in your kitchen? Do you have serious newspaper (mail, insurance policies, magazines) cluttering up areas?
2. Room by room clean out everything you did not want in that room.
3. Research your option for better storage to fit the remaining items, keeping budget and room decor in mind.
4. Purchase the storage tools you need a room at a time (unless you gain a great price on everything). Organize that one room and see how it works for you. You may need to tweek things here and there to craft them the most useful for you.

Answers: Here is a simple way to remember the step in organize any space.
S - P - A - C - E
S - sort through everything in the room and make sure that you single have stuff for that room that belongs there. Don't enjoy kitchen items in a bedroom or bedroom items in a living room.
P - purge anything explicitly not needed, not wanted, broken or unfixable . You can toss, donate or recycle.
A - Assess your wishes and your resources. What is there left that you are going to put support into this room.? Are these items going to be displayed or stored? Is there any vertical space to use ?
C - containerize. What types of containers would you need to store the items. Measure things close to video tapes or DVD's, stuffed animals etc. Would you be better with see through storage bins or bins that do not hold lids? Do not purchase anything until you have done this assessment. You want to create sure that you buy the right containers for the items and the space.
E - Evaluate. Once you get everything done it might not work exactly as you had envisioned. Do not be afraid to craft changes. Sometimes you just never know how something is going to work until you enjoy lived with it for while.
Do ONLY one room at a time or it will feel rather overwhelming. The more you do this the better you will get at it.
