I have a living room and kitchen (connected) that look really nice when adjectives the lights are ablaze. But surrounded by the late evening, short those lights all on, it looks drab.

The floor is a dusk wood, the walls are a dark (gray-like) white beside a swirly stucco-like texture, and the counter-tops are earth-tones. Most of the furniture is dark too, except for the couch, which is white. Floor rugs are grey. There are dark hardwood bookcases built surrounded by.

I like adjectives the darker stuff I own when the lights are fired up, but in low street lamp it just looks depressing.

Answers:    Sounds resembling you need colorful paraphernalia and some appropriately placed accent lighting. Put your lights on a dimmer so you facet areas without a blaze of hurricane lantern and maybe give some undercounter lighting in your kitchen for a nice evening affect. Change out some of your dark accessories, rugs etc. for ones next to more color.
You could get a few table lamp for around the furniture?? or candle light.. or include a few white accents close to pillows etc...
