I would love to do it as a DIY project, but I have no theory where to even start off gathering materials. What is it made of? What steps do I stir through to achieve this look?
Sometimes there are special things that you are supposed to put on your ceiling that you can find at home restructuring centers and sometimes flooring places. In this case, this looks approaching a hard opportunity, and I know that you want it to be a DIY project, but it'll be a lot of work, so be prepared. Good luck!
Looks like a metal ceiling which have those designs.
The nearest you may come to that is by "stomping and swirling" beside brushes.
You would use three scrub brushes attached to a wood palette, somewhat like a circle. The palette is attached to a pole.
Heavy texture would be used.
You would want some experience to accomplish this. I don't suggest that you try this as DIY.
Have you ever seen stucco near a similar appearance?
Mexicans are very powerful of doing this.
Answers: You can get done that look with textured wallpapers call anaglypta. However that particular finish appears to be lincrusta. It's a bit harder to work near and if you have never used it, you should do a incredibly small project first to understand how it works up to that time attempting to DIY. Or you can hire someone, usually an experienced painter or paper installer will know how to do this application.
