The kitchen is tiny. There is about 5 foot of counter space on each side of the sink and nowhere else. The stove is across the room next to nothing on respectively side. I need counter space over near really bad, cooking is really difficult lacking it. Any ideas??
A rolling butcher block table. They come in different length with storage on the bottom. Loews Home Improvement have a nice selection.

You could buy a portable kitchen island, the type with wheel, and put it beside the range. They're not cheap, but sometimes you can find them surrounded by garage sales or at doesn`t matter what bargain store you own in your community. (They enjoy them at Zellers in Canada, for instance.)

I'm shaking my principal here because your description fits to a tee the house I a short time ago sold two and a half weeks ago. Worse, nearby was no place for the microwave but right beside the stove, so we couldn't own an island.
Answers:    I have a closet-sized kitchen in an dated house with total sq ft of 750. I hung a plywood box from the ceiling and anchord to the wall above the apt sized selection for a microwave. The top gave me more storage space. I get a small cabinet at a building surplus store and put a chunk of butcher block on it. A utility cart would be well brought-up and can find one on rollers in different sizes at Big Lots, Lowes, Home Depot, Badcock home furnishings, Freds Discount Store. Other places are flea market, Good Will, Salvation Army, yard sale, Habitat for Humanity ReStores and you might try registering and asking for one on freecycle.org
