Answers:    Its adjectives about cost and slightly frankly if you do your homework and find a cheap fabricator -( which is where the majority of the cost comes from ) you can get hold of your costs down substantially. You will pay almost matching per sq ft for granite tile retail as the fabricator will pay for slab granite wholesale if standard colors and not exotics are special.

Then it just comes down to labor, if you look you can find relatives who will fabricate and install granite at 25 - 30 per foot
for selected colors

With granite tile a dutiful installer will charge about 8 per foot, you will foot 10 per foot for the tile, need prep work and still enjoy to create an edge, if you shift with the premade granite top which are 10 per foot you will be right at slab cost and have an inferior product. The just other alternatives are wood edge , which look low extension

Like I said shop around, do your own demo and you can get the costs pretty similiar

I would progress with the slabs. Now a granite overlay can be done over existing countertops. I hear it is smaller number expensive.
