We are expecting a new toddler and we have a small house. Our girls currently own their own rooms but are excited about sharing one. The bigger of the two rooms is still fundamentally very small so we're have trouble figuring out how to net the best use of all the space. I'd close to ideas for keeping the room functional however still fun and unique.
I'd get something close to this to free up the floor space for toys, desks, or dressers:

If you hold a basement or other space, hold on to everything that doesn't qualify as a cd, stereo, book, or article of clothing in that place and NOT within the bedroom.

I did this with my 10 yr outmoded son and "clean your room" isn't nearly the 3-hour project it used to be! It very soon takes him roughly 30 mins at the most to clean his room.

I also agree that creating plenty of closet space and shelf space will serve. Good luck and congratulations!!
