The space between the 2 X4 's is the "rough opening" which should be a half inch wider and taller than the actual door and frame dimensions to allow for shimming to receive the door plumb and level. So if you hold a 30" door with a 1 1/2 " frame solidity for both sides, then you'll call for a rough opening of 32 inches wide-ranging. Measure the actual height of the door and frame bulk to get a dimension for the rough debut height allowing for a break at the bottom of the door for ventilation or to sweep over hearth rug.
