water contained by them (but not have the mess if they are knock over) they will be backlit with colour shifting lights for that added effect would gelatin work? would it go sour? any other cheapish ideas?
Gelatin is used as a bed for growing all kind of bacteria and molds and other fun stuff contained by labs. You could use it for a night, a short time ago make it triple? quadruple? strength so it stays solid at room heat, but clean it up and throw it out after that hours of darkness before horrid stuff starts growing in it.
I've never tried it...but I should imagine it would progress mouldy after a while...(being water based)
What you involve to get your hand on is clear resin which they use for paperweights!
(there used to be kits to buy next to the special stuff in them)
Answers: gelatin will move about soft or melt at room warmth.
