Now I've paid 1,000 down already, of about a 6,000.00 estimate. It's a house sculpture job. Guy is in a bit of a money bind and wants some cashola. He's also a friend of mine. But I've had very discouraging experiences with painters past. So far he has done a great job, but have actually only worked almost 5 days. Should I give him another grand to craft it 1/3 or is he asking for something unusual?
For a project this small, it's typical to collect enough for materials up front, and then wage the rest when the job is done.

Don't give him any more money (even if he is a friend) because the probability are quite high that he will nick a scamper leaving you with an imperfect job.
$200 a day is not out of line for a painter, however some ethnic group, painters, carpenters, carpet layer, etc. have a threshold for money. In other words they can work one week, then skip a few days, afterwards work 3 days, etc. They aren't ambitious enough to work everyday all month long. They are chirpy to make enough for coup¨¦ payment, rent food and a little extra - that may one and only mean they need to work 15 days out of the month.
If you want your house finished contained by a reasonable amount of time, explain to him that the sooner he gets the house finished, the sooner he get paid. It would be different if you hired him by the hour, you did not. You hired him by the post, and you need the job finished as soon as possible.
Several tricks of the trades to examine for. Pay him early once - he will ask for early sum again.
Don't pay him until the last daylight of the week Friday at 5pm.
Watch out if you are having him buy the paint - there are several grades of house paint-and it should not be thinned down.
If he is a friend, a short time ago tell him you are borrowing the money and the bank wishes to see progress before paying out the money.
Everyone can use the money - but remember it's really hard to bring someone to finish a job when you have already salaried them.
Advice: Don't ever hire friends to work for you !!
Answers:    He is not asking for anything unusual. My parents company has been doing business for over 40 years, they other ask for half down before starting a assignment. Trust goes both ways, and although you have no blatant assurance he (or anyone for that matter) will complete the job, he has no blatant assurance you will pay him.
I would give him another distinguished.^
It is normal for a contractor to ask for a percentage prior to the work mortal done. You have given him $1000.00 already so you are good to walk.. Pay the rest when he finishes the job. If he is having money problems the faster he finishes the opening the faster he gets paid.. I would not afford them one more penny till the job contained by complete
