I've never heard of mat tile. How do you install them and what are the advantages/disadvantages compared to a roll of carpet?

Are the tiles cheaper? Easier?
Some hotels and even my Grandpa's nursing home are installing carpet tiles because of the confidence of repairs - make a spot purely lift up and replace the tile (not the integral carpet). But, in my Grandpa's nursing home the runner tiles are fraying at the edges and it is pretty noticeable that the mat is just hearth rug tiles because you can see each rim is....fluffy. Is that a good description? The fringe looks gluey. I think regular mat would last longer. Especially if it's a large traffic area - or if it will ever take cleaned with a mat cleaner - carpet cleaners really cleave up the tiles.

Seems like a huge squander of money to me.

only just put carpet tile surrounded by my son's room, they look soooo cute because its only around the foot of the bed, the rest are tiles. so for a small spot/area
advantages: it looks cute/contemporary-ish
disadvantages: it moves alot. so my interview is how do you keep it within place?

so if i had a plan to maintain it "nailed to the floor" i would vote "yay" for the runner tiles.
Answers:    The runner tiles are easier to install. They have the authority that if you make a spot on one, you can elevate it up and replace it. Great if you have kids or pets. They merely snap together from what I've seen. Haven't priced them, though, so I can't recount about that.
