I have some gold ingots colored lamp shades that my wonderful son drew on next to a sharpie. Is there anyway to merely spray paint them white or will it completely ruin them to do this? We have a birthday get-together on Saturday and I really don't want to have to run out and buy new shades. I intuitively have no problem buying fresh ones, but my husband does. Thanks!
Yes, but because they own water stains, you will obligation to use Zinsser stain blocking primer first. Tape off adjectives of the mechanics and use spray paint and the spray primer. If you don't prime, the water stains and the float will bleed through the paint.

If you spray paint a lampshade beside a solid color, the paint will eventually crack if the shade gets too hot. The colors will start to appear lopsided as the paint begins to wear.

Now, you could splatter paint the shade to blanket the stains, and since the paint is not a solid surface, it will allow more air circulation and prevent cracking. If splatter paint isn't your style, you can apply some current fabric to the shades to cover the old-fashioned fabric. It will own to be a darker color yard goods so that you won't see through to the old stains. You could use a gum gun to apply it, or stitch it around the edges.

All of these suggestions are ways that you could make the shades look better lacking spending much money, or they are ways that you can customize the shades in your own approach. It's really a question of time versus money. If you appeal your time and have the money, you'd be better bad getting new shades. If you are trying to squirrel away money or if you want to personalize your shades, try one of the other options. Good luck!
Answers:    you can spray with an acrylic latex spray paint or yard goods paint which is both heat tolerant and flexible. But be aware that when you turn on the flimsy, that sharpie mark may show up (especially if white). Other alternative is to use wallpaper and cut out (pattern can be found on website for cut out) or material and glue gun it.
If your going to buy spray paint, wouldn't it be cheaper in recent times to buy a new shade? Walmart is a flawless place to go.
