Can you paint radiators beside nomal emulsion paint or is a special underneath coat needed?
I think you can by special radiator paint. Emulsion paint will peel stale. You can buy radiator paint at any DIY store.
You should not paint with emulsion as it will break down with the steam over a period of time, if you ask in the shop they will narrate you ,you need special radiator paint but a decent explain is ok as long as you rub it down. REMEMBER if you use cheap paint it will go off colour exceedingly quick because of the heat.
Only trouble near undercoat if the paint is very chipped or stained. And remember to use fine paper to rub down. Normal make notes on is ok, use a mini roller to get a very smooth brush sitting duck free effect and when you have finished heat the radiator up to hot and afterwards turn off, the heat will smooth out the paint.

Any oil-based paints. I'd put one undercoat and one explain, same paint as woodwork. Never emulsion. NO. You need a proper heat and colour resistant paint you can achieve this at B&Q or any good DIY store and you do not need a below coat.

I was taught that it is gloss-on-gloss, no undercoat, and no emulsion. 1 coat of interpret. Rub down first. Emulsion will crack with the heat
I own not tryed it myself but I have heard you can use emulsion paint on a radiator but you will enjoy to put clear varnish over the emulsion. theoretically it should be a heat resistant paint.
I enjoy however been using ordinary emulsion paint to meeting the room colour for years with no apparent problems.
