Answers: Yes, you can, but you stipulation to use a coat of oil-based primer before you paint. If the wood have been hermetically sealed or treated, as many cabinet are, you should lightly sand them first to aid the primer bond better.
My personal preference is to NEVER paint over good-looking woods such as oak.
yes the cabinets can be painted. Check next to a reputable paint store or go to trellis site. The cabinets call for to be treated with primer and next painted or the paint will slide off. It can be somewhat time consuming but worth it if the oak cabinet are ugly looking or don't fit next to the rest of the room. For example I have knotty pine ceiling and oak cabinets!
