Can I varnish over a painted surface? I have a dressing table that have been painted next to emulsion...

I have a dressing table that have been painted next to emulsion and will scratch sour very efficiently if i don't varnish it!!

I know i should have used a satin wood but you can't go and get the same flat finish as you can next to emulsion!

Answers:    As long as its not glossy very soon then yes you can, emulsion is hose based and varnish is grease based but much thicker to see you to paint over the top. I've done it in the recent past and it worked a treat.
