I'm getting ready to buy a foreclosed home, the previous owner built a really nice deck, but I don't have an idea that he pulled a permit to do it. When the City Inspector comes to my house and if they see something going on for the deck the is not code (for instance, the deck is about 4-5 inches below the door, when it's supposed to be 2-3 inches) will he label me tear it down? or a moment ago have me donate a step and pull a certification?

Thanks.
Answers:    As far as I am aware decks do not require permit, however if the stairs are not to code you would have to fix them.
Where I live near is no permit call for. And a 4 or 5 inch step doesn't seem approaching a problem to me either. I wouldn't verbs about that.
