I'm broke but really want to spice up my bedroom with maroon and golds. Any ideas on how to engender it look elegant on a tight budget? Thanks guys!
Just use lots of fabric. Go to Fabricland (or a store approaching it) when they are having their sale and buy lots of fabric to cover the window with long flowing drapes, and trademark your own coverlet, and cushions. Buy a comfy chair second foot and reupholstered it with cloth (buy a simple chair...not an flowing chore). Make your own headboard (check out cityline or Martha Stewart for ideas) with harmonious fabric. Beautiful.
I know on those decorating shows they other go to Big Lots. Not sure if you own one nearby but they really do enjoy some good bargain. Also you can go to thrift stores and dollar stores and some of them hold some nice things that look really expensive. Also try some yard sale.
You can get those tassle things and some cheap but nice cloth and put it around your bed or on your windows. Get some nice candles resembling at Wal-Mart and some candle sticks from the Dollar Tree. Also you might want to pick up some picture frames at the Dollar Tree, they have nice ones. Get a cheap can of spray paint and paint some of your things you already enjoy. You can always re-cover some of your throw pillows next to gold and claret fabric.
Hope this help!
Answers: Lots of great philosophy have already be posted. I would also splurge on small accents and try to hold the cheap stuff to a minimum. You can get dapper hanging lantern, etc. from World Market and a cool throw can accent a plain bed to some extent than buying a cheap comforter that will look nasty within a few months. Tasteful painting will progress a long way and you can also pocket some cool pictures and buy cheap frames and add those kind of accents. Try to choose practically so you don't end up have a gaudy palace.
