Answers:    Re arrange! I find that when I'm looking for a exchange, the best, easiest thing I can do is rearrange my furniture. Remove anything you don't call for from your room and change stuff around until you like it.
Also, spray paint is your best friend. I know it's something to buy, but it's small and terribly inexpensive and you can change the colors of things easily. Also try looking around at thrift stores or antique shops for cute, funky things to put contained by your room. Make sure it's something you'll use and love. And don't forget that you can paint most things to be the right color!
Paint...as long as you stay away from red, most colours are about the same price. Red costs more because in that is (believe it or not) gold in it.

Go to garage and rummage sale and look for pillows, curtains, comforters, afghans, etc... You can also find some inexpensive plastics and glass to make "stained glass" effects on the lantern (leave the top uncovered so the heat doesn't damage anything or start a fire).

As for sounding cheap...nah, you nouns broke. :D

Good Luck!
