Is there an average price per sq ft for remodeling (adding a 2nd story) to our existing house contained by Los Angeles? can anybody give us a ballpark digit?

I don't conjecture anybody can give you a ballpark for this project lacking actually seeing it. Another item is: are you trying to get an estimate for the ornament (that's something only a common contractor can help you with) or to determine the cost of designer's services? ( Adding a story and remodeling are two different things:)). If you are looking for designer's quote: that depends on the designer, but i know that surrounded by LA, you are probably looking at at least $5.00-$10.00 per sq.ft. plus the markup, or anywhere from $100 - $250.00/ hour. So, if it is a designer you are looking for, i would be lively to take on your project (no business how small or large it is) at a exceedingly reasonable cost!
