I am looking to buy a door from Lowe's but it is too big for my opening...nearly 1 - 1.5 inches off in reality. Is this normal? Or is my house lately old? I would own to cut the door to fit, can I do that? Would I have to hire a contractor or could this be done by a handyman? Thanks!
Buy a door slightly smaller, sooner, and then build up the interior frame so the door will fit.
External doors are not all standard distance. They are typically standard height. If you own an old house, your door may enjoy been made by a craftsman right here on the site. If you need a specific size or special size, you could consider two things.
1. Have a door specially made to fit the existing framework.
2. Have the prehistoric framework removed and replaced with a pre-hung exterior door of a standard size. This may be the lowest expensive way to jump.
In either covering, you should have a carpenter who is competent contained by hanging doors do the work.
Answers: Cutting down the door (I assume it is wood and not a fiberglass or steel covered door) is not a big agreement for a really experienced do-it-yourselfer. If you're not in that league next you need a carpenter to do it.
