I have laminate countertops, and I'm redo-ing the entire kitchen, but I can't afford to replace them. I'm fundamentally hands-on and crafty. Any ideas??
Answers: Good article your crafty. There is a product that can be special ordered at lowes ,it is called TAVY THIN SKIN.You spread the tavy sticky stuff on top of the laminate consequently apply the fiberglass reinforced paper and smooth it out. Then apply a tight layer of mastic higher than the paper and you own a surface you can apply anything to.www.tavytools.com the nice thing going on for this is that it doesnt add any altitude to the countertop.
If your doing it yourself, it shouldn't cost that much. Have you thought about doing a tile mosaic? Or pouring your own concrete countertop? You can also use a trim amount of concrete, with something more attractive - like stones or broken chalice - on the top. Ed Begley Jr. (well known environmentalist and actor) have kitchen countertops made from broken glass and concrete ^_^ I'm not sure just about technical details for doing it yourself or what it take to make tile stick to laminate, but I'm sure you can find out.
