Both! My husband and I use Flannel surrounded by the winter, and regular cotton in the summer. By the way flannel is made out of cotton. Flannel keep the heat in, and the more you bath it the softer it gets. A good characteristic flannel is so soft you dont want to get out of bed! Now a regular cotton sheet the higher the thread count the softer/nicer. You want the top thread count possible. Trust me on this, if you go cheap you will hate it. Cheaper and low thread count sheets perceive like sleeping on a paper shoulder bag.

I love Jersey Sheets! They are affordable, and so comfy you will never want to get out of bed. Depending on the size of your bed they range from $8-$20 for the in one piece set! I swear by them, also really easy to clean! Also they are sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Conway's, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Enjoy!
