I have never tried to verbs shoes with a sleight of hand eraser, but have cleaned hurricane lantern shades with one. Lightly damp a clean (new is best) eraser and wipe helpfully. Move in one direction single, don't rub hard. Just hold on to wiping benevolently and you'll be surprised how much dirt is removed.
