Is this related to Sodium Laureth Sulphate? Is it a harmful substance or a gentle chemical? It is within some 'natural' dishwashing detergent I bought and I'm just wondering if it really is gentle and innate or if it is a fancy way of describing SLS so that it doesn't look like that's what is within it.
Answers: It is another way of confusing the consumer -
It is Sodium Lauryl Ether sulphate with two moles of Ethylene Oxide ( ie SLES 2EO) instead of SLES 3EO which is usually used surrounded by detergents and is also harsh on skin.
* Look for products that contain Betaines instead -
Cocamidopropyl betaine is a medium strength surfactant which most repeatedly does not irritate skin or mucous membranes.
- Cocamidopropyl betaine is the active ingredient in Johnson & Johnson's Baby rinse out.
Good luck!!
Hi Annie, please read this wikipedia summary of the substance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laur... The article dispels the myth that SLES, (as sodium laurel ethylene sulphate is called) is carcinogenic. SLES is commonly used as a foaming agent in cosmetics and detergents., and as a substitute for sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) While SLS is a known irritant, some evidence and research suggest that SLES can also produce irritation after extended exposure.
Hope this helps. If you have sensitive skin, I suggest you wear some rubber gloves when using the detergent.
