The crusty stuff is minerals left over from your slap water when the iron make steam. Use distilled water & that won't surface.
There's some stuff you can buy at the grocery store that you add to the sea that will clean out the mineral deposits. Add the stuff, put your iron on lofty, and run it over an old towel or something that you don't thought about ruining.
