I do this for a living. Trust me the safest course is a normal vegetable grease from your kitchen. Get a soft clean cloth and pour some grease on it then delicately rum it until it goes. It might not come rotten instantly but it will. Anyone should use it on leather for anything. I recently get off paint as ably from an expensive italian leather. The oil doesn't hurt it. I get the tip from a leather maker.
