You have be given several ideas so far, but just to put in one more to the mix, you can try a drop or two of automatic dishwashing detergent. The detergent has a touch of bleach to it so will re-whiten the hearth rug - but I WOULD NOT advise using it on anything that is not COMPLETELY white.

Answers:    I used bleach on my white counter tops for koolaid stains and the clorox turned the stains red. Figuring I had nothing to lose, seeing as how the countop be already ruined, I sprayed lime away on it and it came right out! so if all else fail try lime away! good luck!

if your stairs are white white...try using clorox within warm water. and suck up doesn`t matter what is left with a rainbow vacuum cleaner..
