I have a gas furnace within an older home that have not been used for in the region of four or five years. Does it need to be somehow cleaned out or checked up to that time I try and use it? Can i do this myself and if so, what do I check or clean?
Answers: I'd hold a professional look at it and give it a biddable tune-up. Without a thorough cleaning, you could run into operational problems or the fumes of burning dust and refuse entering your home.
A typical annual servicing visit will run you around $85-$150.
If you want to do it yourself, you could try vacuuming out the interior (*after* you shut stale the gas and electricity), lubing all the bearing, checking the fan belt and replacing the filter yourself, but if you're not comfortable or experienced, you may merely want to call within a pro. It doesn't cost that much.
