Washing should not damage the shoes. Wash next to a couple of old towels or shirts and if you can, spin them twice to bring as much water out of them as possible. Then bring them out and stuff them with crumpled up the Fourth Estate to help them hang on to their shape and dry out of the sun. It will steal a couple of days, but they should be okay.
If you are concerned about wash them in the wash machine, step to an athletic shoe store and ask for cleaner that you put on by hand, that works powerfully too.

I wash my sneakers and my kids sneakers surrounded by the washer all the time on serene cycle. I also can dry them but my dryer came near a shoe rack especially for shoe drying. However Ive dried them the regular way of late thew several towels in beside them.
They always come out great
